Nature Walks at Rabongo Forest

Quick facts: Location: southeast of the main park, roughly 1.5 hours' drive from Paraa · Size: a small forest "island" within the wider savanna, only a few square km · Format: guided walking, not a driving activity

What makes it different

Rabongo is a small pocket of tropical riverine forest surrounded by open savanna — genuinely distinct habitat from the rest of the park, and little-visited compared to Budongo or the main game tracks, which is part of its appeal for travellers wanting a quieter, more exploratory activity. Unlike almost everything else on a standard Murchison Falls itinerary, this is done entirely on foot with a guide, following forest trails rather than driving tracks.

What you might see

Black-and-white colobus and red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, and occasionally chimpanzees are all possible here, alongside strong general forest birding and a range of medicinal plants and tree species guides can point out along the way. It's not built around one guaranteed headline sighting the way chimp trekking is — the appeal is the walk itself and the chance of varied wildlife rather than a single target species.

Practical notes

Rabongo also has picnic and camping facilities, making it a viable half-day or even overnight add-on for travellers wanting to get off the standard circuit. Because it's a walking activity through forest terrain, comfortable closed shoes and reasonable fitness are worth planning for.

Best for

Travellers who've already done the headline activities (game drive, boat cruise) and want a quieter, less-touristed way to spend a morning or afternoon, or anyone specifically drawn to forest walking over vehicle-based safari.
