Paraa is the functional centre of Murchison Falls National Park — not a single attraction so much as the hub everything else connects through. The Nile splits the park into a north and south bank here, and the Paraa Bridge, a 520-metre crossing completed in 2025, is how vehicles now cross between them. It replaced the old vehicle ferry that operated on a fixed daily timetable for decades — if you've read older guidebooks or blog posts about Murchison Falls, this is why many of them still describe queuing for a ferry that no longer runs. Most of the park's best-known lodges — including Paraa Safari Lodge, from which the area takes its overlapping name — sit at or near this crossing point.
The Nile boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls departs from the Paraa jetty, making this the natural starting point for that activity regardless of which bank you're staying on.
Paraa is still the crossing point between banks, but planning around it is far simpler than it used to be. Where the old ferry ran on a scheduled timetable — meaning a lodge on the "wrong" bank from your morning game drive genuinely shaped your departure time — the bridge is open for crossing at any time. If your lodge is on one bank and your game drive is planned for the other (typically the north bank's Buligi area), the only real planning consideration now is ordinary drive time, not a crossing schedule.
The top of the falls is a short drive from Paraa, and Buligi's game-viewing tracks begin just across the river on the north bank. Several lodges — Paraa Safari Lodge, Red Chilli Rest Camp, Twiga Safari Lodge — sit within a few minutes of the crossing itself.
