What it is

Budongo Forest Reserve is East Africa's largest mahogany forest, bordering the southern boundary of Murchison Falls and functioning as a genuinely distinct ecosystem from the park's savanna — tall mahogany and ironwood trees, some reaching 80 metres, forming a canopy that supports an entirely different set of wildlife from the open plains just a short drive away.

The two main tourism sites

Budongo isn't visited as a single undifferentiated forest — two developed sites handle almost all tourist activity:

• Kaniyo Pabidi — the primary chimp trekking site, closer to the main park and easier to access. See the dedicated Kaniyo Pabidi page.

What else is here

Beyond chimpanzees, Budongo hosts red-tailed and black-and-white colobus monkeys, occasional forest elephants, and rarer residents including tree pangolins and elephant-shrews. Two bird species — the Puvel's illadopsis and (by some counts) the Ituri batis — are found nowhere else in East Africa, making Budongo a genuine bucket-list stop for serious birders independent of the chimp-trekking crowd.
