UWEC, popularly known as Entebbe Zoo, isn't part of Murchison Falls National Park — it's included here as an optional extension for travellers routing through Entebbe, either arriving, departing, or with a gap before/after their safari. It began in 1952 as a rescue centre for injured, orphaned, or confiscated wild animals, and was formally reorganised as a conservation education centre in 1994.
For travellers with a spare few hours around a flight, UWEC offers a genuine introduction to Uganda's wildlife — lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, chimpanzees, and the shoebill stork among roughly 120 bird species — in spacious, naturalistic enclosures rather than a conventional zoo layout. It also functions as a real rehabilitation and breeding centre for animals that can't survive in the wild, not purely an entertainment venue.
Travellers with a layover or a day either side of their safari in Entebbe, families travelling with children who want a lower-intensity wildlife introduction before the main safari, or anyone wanting to see rescued/rehabilitated animals up close in a way the national parks don't allow.
