The longer, more scenic route between Masindi and the park's Bugungu Gate descends the Rift Valley escarpment, and the drop offers some of the most dramatic landscape views associated with Murchison Falls — sweeping panoramas across Lake Albert and the Rift Valley floor, with the Blue Mountains of DR Congo visible in the distance on clear days. This is a genuinely different landscape experience from the savanna and river scenery most visitors associate with the park.
This route is longer than the standard Kichumbanyobo approach (roughly 135km from Masindi versus 85km), so it suits travellers with a bit more time, or those specifically prioritising the scenic value of the journey over the fastest route in. It also passes through sections of Budongo Forest, adding wildlife and birding interest to the drive itself.
